Are You Struggling to Feel Connected in Your Relationship?
Do you feel like you're having the same arguments over and over again?
Perhaps communication has broken down, you feel more like housemates than partners, or the closeness and affection you once shared seem to have disappeared.
You might feel unheard, misunderstood or emotionally distant from the person you love. Perhaps trust has been damaged, or you're questioning whether your relationship can survive.
Sometimes, even when two people love each other, they can find themselves stuck in patterns of hurt, frustration and disconnection.
You don't have to work through these difficulties alone.
At JP Counselling Group Practice, we provide professional, compassionate couples counselling in Hull and Hedon, as well as online sessions, to help couples better understand one another, rebuild communication and explore a way forward.

Relationships can become difficult for many reasons. Work pressures, parenting, financial worries, different emotional needs, past experiences and significant life changes can all place strain on a relationship.
Over time, these pressures may lead to resentment, repeated arguments or emotional withdrawal.
Couples counselling offers a supportive, non-judgemental environment where both partners can feel heard and explore what is happening within their relationship.
Together, we can work towards:
Improving communication – Learning how to express feelings and needs without conversations escalating into arguments.
Breaking negative relationship patterns – Recognising cycles of criticism, defensiveness, withdrawal and misunderstanding.
Rebuilding trust – Exploring hurt, betrayal or infidelity and what may be needed to move forward.
Restoring emotional connection – Understanding how distance has developed and exploring ways to reconnect.
Managing conflict – Finding healthier ways to approach disagreements.
Understanding each other's needs – Developing greater empathy and emotional awareness.
Navigating life changes – Working through parenting challenges, menopause, bereavement, work pressures or changing family circumstances.
Exploring the future of your relationship – Understanding what each partner wants, including when separation is being considered.
Counselling isn't about deciding who is right or wrong. It's about understanding what is happening between you and exploring what might need to change.
"We keep arguing about the same things and never seem to resolve anything."
"I don't feel listened to or understood anymore."
"We've become distant, and I miss how we used to be."
"I feel lonely, even when we're together."
"We've lost our intimacy and affection."
"I don't know whether I can trust my partner again."
"One of us wants to work on the relationship, but the other isn't sure."
"I love my partner, but I don't know how to make things better."
If any of these sound familiar, couples counselling may offer an opportunity to begin understanding what's happening beneath the surface.
1. Understanding Your Relationship
Our initial sessions focus on getting to know you both, understanding your relationship history and exploring what has brought you to counselling.
You'll each have an opportunity to share your experiences, concerns and hopes for the future.
We recognise that partners may experience the same relationship very differently.
2. Recognising Unhelpful Patterns
Sometimes the problem isn't simply what couples argue about, but how they respond to each other when difficult feelings arise.
One partner may seek reassurance while the other withdraws. One may become frustrated while the other feels criticised or overwhelmed.
Together, we'll explore these patterns and the feelings, needs and experiences behind them.
3. Developing Understanding and Communication
We'll support you in finding different ways to communicate, listen and respond to one another.
This may include learning to recognise emotional triggers, expressing needs more openly, developing healthier boundaries and managing difficult conversations.
4. Finding a Way Forward
Every relationship is different, and there is no single outcome that couples counselling should produce.
For some couples, the work focuses on rebuilding connection and trust. For others, it may involve understanding whether they wish to continue their relationship or navigate separation with greater care and respect.
Our role is not to make decisions for you, but to support you in making informed choices.
It is not unusual for one partner to feel more ready for counselling than the other.
One of you may be hopeful, while the other feels uncertain, worried or exhausted by previous attempts to resolve things.
You don't need to arrive with all the answers or agree about every problem.
However, couples counselling works best when both partners are willing to participate in exploring their relationship.
If your partner isn't ready, individual counselling may also provide space for you to understand your feelings, needs and choices.
Couples counselling can be helpful whether you've been together for a few years or several decades.
You don't need to wait until your relationship reaches crisis point.
Seeking help earlier may prevent difficulties from becoming more deeply entrenched.
Where there is abuse, coercive control or a fear of speaking openly, joint counselling may not be appropriate. We consider each couple's circumstances and suitability before beginning the work.
Reaching out for couples counselling can feel daunting, particularly when things have been difficult for some time.
You may be worried about what will be said, whether the counsellor will take sides, or whether your relationship can change.
At JP Counselling Group Practice, we aim to offer a respectful, balanced and compassionate environment where both partners have the opportunity to be heard.
